SEO for Beginners

Honored to have been featured on Deanna Seymour’s podcast about SEO myths.

If you’re just dipping your toe into the SEO world, and you’re wondering, “where do I even start?”

Start here!

If you already have 50-100 pages of content on your site, here are some tips to start optimizing your content for search. There are 200+ things you could do, start with these 10.

If you don’t have any content yet, make some. That’s the only way to generate organic traffic.

Tips for starting with SEO

  1. Write about things you hear about. 3 times is a pattern - you don’t need keyword tools to find topics.

  2. Set your permalinks wisely.

  3. Save your flair for your title tag, and make sure you set one.

  4. Word count doesn’t matter, just cover the topic comprehensively.

  5. One page = one topic = many potential keywords

  6. You can go back and edit, add, delete, modify to keep your content fresh. Link around to other pages on your site (without using “click here”).

  7. I spend 1/3 of my time on old content and 1/3 of my time on new content.

  8. If you’re a podcaster, transcribe your episodes and put the text on the page. Google can only read HTML.

  9. Make sure all of your content “meets searcher intent”. Forget your grandma’s upbringing, get to the pot roast recipe.

Hope that helps get you started!
